Nichols modernized the design and offered several variants in order to broaden it's application. Basically, thogh it is the same mill. These machines were the mainstay of small milling production.

Nichols & Sons of Waltham, Massachusetts( the spiritual home of many early American precision machine tools) the Nichols "Hand Milling Machine", as it was termed in advertising literature, was a robust, beautifully-built tool intended for "volume production of small parts at low cost.

I was wondering if there ever was a vertical milling attachment for a horizontal mill? It would seem that it would be a somewhat useful attachment. It could slide on the over arm ways and either be powered by the horizontal spindle or be self contained with its own motor. My horizontal mill is not accurate enough I think as pertains to the table movement to be of much real use.
